Anton-Proksch-Haus, Mountain hut in Werfenweng, Austria
The Anton-Proksch-Haus sits at 1590 meters on the southern side of Tennengebirge and offers shelter for mountain hikers and climbers year-round. It has 12 standard beds and 44 bunk spaces, accommodating both groups and solo travelers.
The refuge was built by Naturfreunde Bischofshofen between 1961 and 1963, following the organization's purchase of the Ladenbergalm land in 1957. Its construction reflected efforts to make the alpine region more accessible to hikers and climbers.
The hut has served as a meeting place for climbers and hikers who gather to enjoy traditional Austrian dishes and local food specialties. It represents how alpine refuges function as social spaces where travelers share experiences and find rest during their mountain journeys.
You can reach the hut by taking the Werfenwenger Bergbahnen gondola to Bischlinghöhe and then walking downhill. The location is accessible year-round and offers good conditions for different seasons.
From this location, mountaineers can reach four notable peaks: Frommerkogel, Tauernkogel, Eiskogel, and Bleikogel, each presenting different climbing challenges and views. These summits offer routes suited to various experience levels.
