Buchbergkirche, Bischofshofen

Buchbergkirche, Bischofshofen, Romanesque church on Buchberg hill in Bischofshofen, Austria.

Buchbergkirche is a Romanesque church sitting on a hillside in Bischofshofen with a single rectangular nave and a later Gothic choir. The building has two distinct entrances on its western and southern sides, with buttresses reinforcing the exterior walls.

The building was constructed around 1200, possibly on the site of an earlier 11th-century fortification. The church received its first written mention in 1370.

The interior features a coffered wooden ceiling and carved railings that reflect the craftsmanship traditions of the region. These decorative elements show how local artisans expressed their skill in religious spaces during the medieval and early modern periods.

Visiting requires arrangement with the Bischofshofen parish office, which schedules viewing appointments and guided tours. It is best to contact them in advance to confirm availability before planning your visit.

The tower holds two original bronze bells from earlier centuries, including the large Maria-Magdalena bell from 1509. These ancient bells are rare examples of medieval metalwork and are still rung for special occasions today.
