Bischofshofen, Mountain municipality in Sankt Johann im Pongau District, Austria
Bischofshofen is a municipality located at 544 meters elevation in the Northern Limestone Alps, situated along the Salzach river and surrounded by the Hochkönig and Tennen mountain ranges. The settlement occupies a broad valley floor and serves as a central junction in the Alpine landscape.
The area attracted Celtic tribes who exploited copper and salt deposits before Roman control was established in the region. The settlement was first recorded in historical documents under the name Hoven in 1151.
The name Bischofshofen refers to the Prince-Bishops of Salzburg who held significant landholdings here and shaped local governance for centuries. This religious heritage remains visible in the community's traditions and identity.
The town is well connected by the Salzburg-Tyrol Railway and sits directly on the Tauern Autobahn, making it easy to reach other Alpine destinations and ski areas. Visitors will find good facilities here for exploring the surrounding mountain region.
The Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze hosts the final leg of the Four Hills Tournament each January, where ski jumpers from around the world compete at the highest level. This event draws large crowds and puts the town on the international winter sports calendar.
