Knoten Pongau, Highway junction in Pongau region, Austria.
Knoten Pongau is a highway junction in the Pongau region that connects the A10 Tauern Autobahn with the A10a feeder road near Bischofshofen. The site consists of multiple ramps and lanes that direct traffic between the two roads.
Plans for this highway section started in 1941 but were halted by World War II and resumed from 1969 onward. The junction emerged as a key part of postwar Alpine infrastructure development.
The junction represents a significant element of Austrian infrastructure engineering, demonstrating the integration of mountain highway systems in Alpine regions.
The junction has speed limits of 80 kilometers per hour to enhance driving safety. Visitors should be familiar with the exit layout and note that lanes are clearly marked to avoid confusion.
The ramp descends at a notable gradient and features concrete barrier modules between directional lanes. These safety partitions were installed in 2007 to prevent head-on collisions between opposing traffic flows.
