Schloss Ruegers, Medieval castle and museum in Hardegg, Austria

The Riegersburg Castle sits upon a dormant volcano at 450 meters elevation, featuring extensive fortifications with five gates and two trenches.

The first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1212 when the medieval fortress belonged to the Count of Hardegg.

Franz Anton Pilgram redesigned the structure between 1730 and 1780, incorporating Baroque elements and the Chapel of Saint Sigismund.

The castle houses temporary exhibitions across 25 accessible rooms, while the remaining 83 rooms remain closed to the public.

In 2021, artist Gottfried Helnwein and real estate entrepreneur Klemens Hallmann acquired the property for cultural development.
