Schloss Ruegers

Schloss Ruegers is a castle in Hardegg situated on a dormant volcano and surrounded by multiple fortifications. Approximately 25 rooms are accessible to visitors and display various exhibitions, while the remaining spaces are closed to the public.

The castle was first documented in 1212 as a medieval fortress belonging to the Count of Hardegg. Between 1730 and 1780, it was redesigned with Baroque features that define its appearance today.

The chapel inside displays Baroque decorations that visitors encounter while moving through the rooms. The furnished spaces reflect how people lived across different periods and offer a sense of daily life through the centuries.

Visitors should take time to explore the accessible rooms at their own pace, as not all areas of the castle are open. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear, as the location sits on uneven terrain with stairs throughout.

The castle sits on the ridge of an extinct volcano, a geographical feature that made its strategic position exceptionally valuable in the past. This volcanic foundation is not immediately obvious, but it explains the elevated and fortified nature of the location.
