Vranov nad Dyjí Castle, Baroque château in Vranov nad Dyjí, Czech Republic

Vranov nad Dyjí Castle sits on a steep rocky cliff above the Thaya River, blending older elements with Baroque structures and featuring a grand oval hall crowned by a cupola. The interior contains elaborate decorations, chapels, and living quarters that reflect how the noble residents lived.

The castle was first documented around 1100 as a border fortress and served a defensive purpose for centuries. The biggest transformation came between 1680 and 1700, when the Althann family converted the property into a Baroque palace and made it their main residence.

The Hall of Ancestors displays statues and allegorical paintings that tell the story of the Althann family through artistic and architectural details. The room gives a sense of how wealthy families presented their lineage and status to visitors.

Visitors can explore the castle on different routes that provide a good overview of the main rooms. It helps to allow time for the climb to the building, since its steep location means sturdy footwear and some fitness are beneficial.

In the late 1700s, the castle operated a significant pottery workshop that ran from 1790 to 1882. This manufactory produced earthenware inspired by English pottery designs, making the property an important center of craftsmanship in the region.
