Vranov nad Dyjí, Medieval castle town in South Moravia, Czech Republic

Vranov nad Dyjí is a small town in South Moravia that sits along the Dyje River at about 312 meters elevation, forming natural borders with Austria. The Baroque castle and surrounding buildings define the character of the place.

The first documented mention of the place dates to 1100, after which the castle changed hands among various noble families over centuries. In the 17th century, the Althann family undertook major renovations that shaped its appearance to this day.

The Baroque castle complex shows how a medieval fortress was transformed into a grand residence during the 17th century by the Althann family. This transformation still shapes how visitors experience and understand the town today.

The best time to visit is during the warmer months when the Dyje riverbank invites walks through the town. Wear sturdy shoes since the old town is hilly and paths to the castle include steep sections.

From 1790 to 1882, the town operated a specialized pottery workshop that produced its own style of English-inspired ceramic ware. This workshop was known throughout the region and helped support the town's economy.
