Rote Spitze, Mountain peak in East Tyrol, Austria
Rote Spitze is a mountain summit in the Villgraten range at 2,956 meters elevation, situated in the Defereggen Alps near the Austrian-Italian border. The peak rises prominently above the Innervillgraten valley and shapes the landscape's profile.
The mountain was first summited on January 14, 1896 by climber J. Erlsbacher under winter conditions. This early winter ascent shows the peak was recognized as a challenge for experienced mountaineers.
The mountain name generates discussion among local residents who see Rote Spitze as the eastern and higher summit, unlike official maps. This local perspective reflects how people in the region understand and relate to the peaks around them.
The climb starts from the Oberstaller Alm parking area at 1,820 meters elevation. The route covers roughly 9 kilometers with steel cables securing the final 150 meters to help climbers on this exposed section.
The traverse between this peak and neighboring Weiße Spitze is an unmarked climbing section requiring grade III technical skills. This challenging connection is suitable only for experienced mountaineers.
