Lockenhaus Castle, Medieval fortress in Lockenhaus, Austria
Lockenhaus Castle is a stone fortress with circular towers that rises in the Güns Valley of eastern Austria. The complex contains multiple levels including a restored chapel with frescoes, underground passages, and residential chambers spanning several periods.
The castle was founded around 1200 and initially served as a defensive stronghold against invaders from the east. It subsequently came under the control of multiple noble families including the Nádasdy and Esterházy.
The Knights' Hall, once a gathering place for nobility, now hosts chamber music performances and cultural events within its Gothic architecture. Visitors experience the atmosphere of medieval assemblies in their original setting.
Guided tours allow visitors to walk through the chambers and explore the restored chapel along with underground passages. The best time to visit is outside winter months when most areas are fully accessible.
The castle harbors bat colonies and birds of prey in its towers and structures, making it a refuge for various animal species. These inhabitants can sometimes be spotted at dusk when the creatures become active.
