Stilklassen, Educational museum at Margaretenplatz, Berndorf, Austria
Stilklassen is a school building with twelve classrooms, each designed in a different historical architectural style ranging from Egyptian to Empire designs. The rooms contain reproduced doors, wall paintings, and period-appropriate furniture representing these various periods.
The building was constructed in 1909 when Arthur Krupp funded the interior design of the schools to expose children of his factory workers to world art. This idea was unusual for schools of that time and showed an innovative approach to education.
Each classroom displays wall decorations and furniture that represent different architectural styles, showing visitors how spaces looked across various periods. Students learned daily in these designed environments and became familiar with international design traditions.
The school building is located at two sites on Margaretenplatz, with the elementary school in building 5 and the secondary school in building 2. Guided tours can be arranged to visit the various classrooms and learn more about the historical design styles.
One classroom is designed as an Egyptian burial chamber reproduction, with ceiling paintings and hieroglyphics on the walls that transported students to another world. This room shows how creatively teaching was designed to make history come alive through the physical environment.
