Daun-Kaserne, Military training school in Wiener Neustadt, Austria
Daun-Kaserne is a three-story military building in Wiener Neustadt featuring two northern courtyards and a southern honor courtyard, with stone-framed windows and monumental columns. After renovation in 2023, the facility contains 10 classrooms, media rooms, computer labs, study areas, and science facilities for military education programs.
The German Wehrmacht constructed this facility between 1939 and 1940 in the Akademiepark on the site of a former swimming pool. It forms part of the world's oldest continuously operating officer training institution, established through Maria Theresa's military reforms.
The building was named in 1966 after Field Marshal Leopold Joseph Graf Daun, an influential 18th-century Austrian military commander. This naming reflects the long tradition of military education connected to this location.
The grounds are located in Akademiepark with clear signage making navigation straightforward, as modern markers identify the main areas. Visitors should keep in mind this is an active school facility, so arranged visits are advisable.
The structure replaced a site formerly used for water recreation, marking an unusual shift from leisure space to military training. This conversion of a recreational area into one of the country's most respected schools is rare in European architectural history.
