Maria Kirchental, Catholic pilgrimage church in Sankt Martin bei Lofer, Austria
Maria Kirchental is a church situated at 900 meters elevation in the Loferer Steinbergen mountains with two distinctive towers on its east side. The building combines Baroque architecture with a timeless appearance that fits naturally into the mountain landscape.
The church was consecrated in 1701 and designed by Johannes Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, a renowned architect of that era. Since then it has served as a spiritual destination for pilgrims from Tyrol, Salzburg, and Bavaria.
This pilgrimage site has drawn visitors from three regions for centuries and remains a place of quiet prayer today. The votive images inside show personal expressions of gratitude from those who came here seeking spiritual help.
Several marked hiking trails lead to the church, including the Salzburger Saalachtal route that connects with the Way of St. James. Visitors should wear good hiking shoes and be prepared for mountain trail conditions.
On the grounds there is a house for reflection where visitors can take part in days of contemplation and meditative practices. This facility is run by specialized spiritual communities.
