Kraushöhle, Show cave in Landl, Austria.
Kraushöhle sits within Gamser Nothklamm gorge and extends 340 meters into Annerlbauernkogel peak, displaying white limestone formations and gypsum crystals throughout. The interior reveals remarkable mineral deposits formed by water interacting with the surrounding rock layers.
Franz Kraus started systematic exploration of the cave in 1881 and opened it to the public in 1882 with electric lighting installed. This made it one of Europe's early show caves equipped with modern illumination technology.
The site holds official designation as a cultural monument since 1913 and participates in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network today.
The cave opens from May through October with guided tours at set times, best visited in sturdy shoes and warm clothing. The damp environment and cool temperatures inside require proper preparation.
This is Europe's only show cave where lime and hydrogen sulphide naturally create gypsum crystals together. This chemical process is found nowhere else and gives the site its geological distinction.
