Pressegger See, Lake in Hermagor-Pressegger See, Austria.
Pressegger See is a lowland lake in Carinthia, set in the Gail Valley near the town of Hermagor. It is surrounded by wooded slopes and has a flat, grassy shore with wide reed beds running along much of its edge.
The Gail Valley, where the lake sits, was home to settlements long before written records, as shown by finds in the area. The region later became part of the Duchy of Carinthia and, over time, fell under Habsburg rule.
The lake takes its name from the nearby village of Presseg, a connection locals are well aware of. On warm days, the shore fills with families, swimmers, and people on bikes who follow the paths around the water.
Several bathing spots around the lake are easy to reach from spring through early autumn, with room to swim and rest. A path runs around the water and works well for walking or cycling at an easy pace.
The shore holds one of the largest reed belts in Austria, giving shelter to water birds and plants that are rarely found elsewhere in the region. Standing quietly at the water's edge, visitors often spot herons and other birds at close range.
