Bürgerwehr, Cultural heritage site in Altstadt, Salzburg, Austria
The Bürgerwehr is a fortification on the Mönchsberg mountain that spans approximately 190 meters and connects the western city walls with medieval fortifications at the mountain's base. The structure includes several towers and was surrounded by defensive ditches.
This defensive structure was built between 1486 and 1488 under Prince-Archbishop Bernhard von Rohr to protect the city. The towers later served as military barracks during the Thirty Years' War.
The Stadtalm restaurant has operated on the mountain since 1863, creating a place where visitors can rest while overlooking the city. This dining spot bridges the gap between the historical fortification and contemporary hospitality in an unexpected location.
The site is accessible via hiking trails that lead to various viewpoints and remain open throughout the year. Wear sturdy footwear, as the terrain is steep and paths can be uneven in places.
After 1575, one tower housed prisoners assigned to fortification maintenance work. This dual purpose shows how the structure served both military defense and administrative functions.
