Museum der Moderne Salzburg

The Museum der Moderne Salzburg is an art museum with two locations in the city that displays modern and contemporary works from the 19th century to the present. The collection comprises around 55,000 pieces, including graphics, photography, and paintings by various artists from different periods.

The museum grew from a private collection that art dealer Friedrich Welz gave to the city of Salzburg. The Rupertinum location opened in 1983, while the Mönchsberg site was added in 2004.

The name refers to its focus on modern and contemporary art, which visitors experience directly when exploring the galleries. The building on the mountainside is regarded by local people as an important cultural landmark that shapes the city's skyline.

The museum is easily reached through various access points on the mountainside or from the city center. Opening hours span several weekdays, and it is advisable to set aside enough time to visit both locations.

The Mönchsberg building is clad with local Untersberg marble, which gives the structure a distinctive material character. This choice of building material connects the museum directly to the geological character of the Salzburg landscape.
