Brenner Base Tunnel, Railway tunnel construction site between Innsbruck, Austria and Fortezza, Italy.
The Brenner Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel running through the Eastern Alps between Austria and Italy. The project includes two main tubes with single tracks and an exploratory tunnel that runs parallel to the main passages.
This project started in 2008 with extensive geological studies to find the best route through the Alps. The construction followed decades of planning and discussion about improving transportation between the two countries.
The Brenner Base Tunnel Information Centre in Steinach presents exhibitions about Alpine geology, engineering methods, and regional transportation development to visitors.
The project is an active construction site, so direct site visits are limited or not possible. However, a visitor center in Steinach offers exhibitions about the project and allows you to understand the work without needing access to the tunnel passages.
The complete tunnel system spans roughly 64 kilometers when the Inn Valley Tunnel is included. Running at depths near 790 meters under the Alps, it will cut travel time significantly between the two countries once finished.
