Luegbrücke, Highway bridge in Gries am Brenner, Austria
The Luegbrücke is a highway bridge on the Brenner motorway A 13 in the Wipptal valley with a length of 1804 meters, running at approximately 1300 meters elevation. The structure spans the valley with a straightforward design and features protective installations underneath to shield against rockfall from the surrounding slopes.
The bridge was built between 1966 and 1968 as part of the development of the Brenner route. Its completion introduced a new capability for high-altitude Alpine transportation that had not been possible before.
The bridge shapes how people in the valley move through their daily lives and is simply accepted as the normal route for locals. It connects communities on both sides and allows residents to conduct their lives without major detours.
When crossing the bridge, be prepared for potentially slower traffic flow, as renovation work beginning in 2025 will reduce it to single-lane traffic in each direction. For longer drives through the region, it makes sense to factor these changes into your travel times.
The surrounding mountain slopes descend steeply at gradients up to 50 degrees, which is why specialized protective nets against falling rocks are installed beneath the structure. These precautions reveal how it was engineered to cope with the harsh high-altitude environment.
