The Jewish cemetery covers 2000 square meters within the grounds of an elderly home in Seegasse, containing numerous stone markers with Hebrew inscriptions.
Between 1540 and 1783, this cemetery served as the primary burial ground for Vienna's Jewish community until Emperor Joseph II prohibited burials within city walls.
The cemetery contains 280 restored gravestones from the original 931, which were temporarily buried at Zentralfriedhof during World War II to protect them.
Access to the cemetery requires coordination through the elderly home administration, and visitors should follow traditional Jewish customs when visiting the grounds.
In 1670, merchant Koppel Fränkel paid 4000 gulden to ensure the cemetery's maintenance following a period of persecution against Vienna's Jewish population.
