Cottage-Sanatorium, Medical sanatorium in Währing district, Vienna, Austria.
The Cottage-Sanatorium is an early medical treatment facility designed in Jugendstil style with five floors and three connected pavilions. It contained 76 patient rooms plus laboratories and areas dedicated to hydrotherapy, mud baths, and electrical treatments.
Doctor Rudolf Urbantschitsch founded this specialized medical facility in 1908 to treat patients with nervous and metabolic disorders. The business thrived initially but was significantly disrupted by World War I.
The building contained reading rooms, music rooms, and winter gardens where patients could spend their leisure time. These spaces show how early 1900s medical thinking combined healing with social and artistic pursuits.
The building is located in the Währing district and is easy to spot from the street thanks to its Jugendstil architecture. Access and orientation are straightforward since the pavilions are clearly structured and visible.
The building contained the largest electric clock system in Vienna at the time, which synchronized timekeeping across multiple rooms. This technical feature reveals how advanced the medical facility was compared to other institutions of its era.
