The hut sits at 2350 meters directly below Mittleres Streitmandl and commands views toward Hochkönig mountain and the Tennengebirge plateau. The building has a kitchen for self-catering, sleeping spots for around 14 people, and operates on a voluntary donation system for beverages.
The hut was built in 1921 when club members hand-carried wooden beams from Achselsandenhütte over Griesscharte pass to Mittleres Streitmandl without mechanical help. This demanding method shows how much effort early climbers invested to create shelter in the mountains.
The hut is maintained by members of the Edelweiss Club who take turns managing it, keeping alive a tradition of climbers helping one another in the mountains. This shared responsibility reflects how mountain communities have always supported each other.
The hut is easiest to reach during summer months, though visitors need to be prepared for the altitude and terrain regardless of season. Those without winter gear or mountain experience should plan a visit during warmer months.
Even when the hut is closed, a separate emergency shelter remains open year-round and can accommodate up to five people if needed. This always-available refuge shows how seriously safety is taken in this remote mountain setting.
