Friedensglocke des Alpenraumes, Peace bell in Telfs, Austria

The Friedensglocke des Alpenraumes is a bronze bell in Mösern, a district of Telfs. The current bell, cast on 23 June 2023 at Grassmayr in Innsbruck from the melted-down previous bell, weighs 10,450 kg net and has a diameter of 2.54 metres. It hangs in a steel frame at a new site about 100 metres north of the old one, west of the former Gasthof Menthon, reached by the trail toward Lottensee.

The first bell was cast on 28 August 1997 at the Grassmayr foundry in Innsbruck and inaugurated on 12 October 1997, the 25th anniversary year of the Arge Alp working community founded in 1972. Silvius Magnago, its founding father, rang it first. A stress crack found in 2016 led to its dismantling in 2023; the bronze was recast and the new bell blessed on 22 October 2023.

The exterior walls display the emblem of Arge Alp and the coats of arms of its ten member countries, representing the unity of Alpine regions.

The new monument stands about 100 metres north of the old site, west of the former Gasthof Menthon, and is reached via the hiking trail toward Lottensee. The old site was served since 2003 by a roughly 90-minute trail. The bell is rung daily at 17:00.

The original 1997 bell was the largest in North Tyrol, cast by Grassmayr with a clapper from Rosswag and six crown handles decorated with angel faces. Foundry staff were unhappy with its dark, rough tone from the start; a stress crack found in 2016 led to its demolition in 2023, and its bronze was recast into the new bell.
