Kloster Pulgarn, Gothic monastery near Steyregg, Austria
Kloster Pulgarn is a T-shaped Gothic building set within a large economic complex that displays medieval architecture and stone decorations throughout. The entire site includes multiple buildings that together form an old religious center beyond just the church.
It was founded in 1303 by Hans von Kapellen and Margaretha von Falkenberg as a religious and social center near Steyregg Castle. In the 1940s, Augustinian Canons from St. Florian Abbey found refuge here after the Nazis confiscated their original monastery.
The monastery contains a late Gothic-style organ rebuilt in 2015 to keep the place's musical heritage alive. You can experience this instrument during visits, hearing how it resonates through the sacred space.
The site is open daily for visits and free to enter as an individual visitor. For groups, guided tours in German and English can be arranged if you contact the monastery in advance.
The monastery started as a joint project that included a care facility for poor and sick people, which made it unusual for a medieval religious site. This combination of spiritual life and practical assistance was an innovative approach for the region at that time.
