Erlakogel, Mountain summit in Ebensee, Austria
Erlakogel is a mountain summit above Ebensee in the Austrian Salzkammergut region, rising to around 5,167 feet (1,575 meters). From the top, several lakes and valleys are visible, including the Traunsee directly below.
The Erlakogel has served as a landmark for travellers moving through the Salzkammergut for centuries, especially along the old salt trade routes. The forests and pastures on its slopes were worked by generations of farmers and woodcutters from the villages below.
The Erlakogel is known among locals as a viewpoint from which several of the Salzkammergut lakes can be seen at once. Hikers often use the summit as a destination for day walks departing from the villages below.
The most common route starts from Rindbach and climbs through forest with steep sections all the way to the top. Sturdy hiking boots and good physical condition are recommended, as the trail does not flatten out much along the way.
A panorama viewer at the summit names the surrounding peaks and the Traunsee below, helping visitors make sense of what they see. This type of orientation aid is relatively rare at smaller hiking destinations like this one.
