Burg Marsbach, Medieval fortress in Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis, Austria
Burg Marsbach is a medieval fortress perched on a narrow terrace above the Danube River. The structure comprises a three-story rectangular main building with a round tower and southern extension that give the complex its cohesive form.
The fortress first appeared in written records in 1075 under the name Morspah. It remained controlled by the Passau bishops throughout the medieval period until the territorial reorganization of 1803.
The castle served for centuries as an administrative center for the Passau bishopric's regional holdings. Its Renaissance modifications still reflect the importance of this governing role.
The fortress is privately owned and requires advance permission for visits, which means planning ahead is necessary. The location is accessible by public transportation from the nearby town of Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis.
From its elevated position, the site offers a direct view of the Danube flow from Niederranna to the Schlögener bend. This strategic vantage point was once crucial for controlling river traffic.
