Burgruine Neu-Montfort, Medieval castle ruins in Götzis, Austria
Burgruine Neu-Montfort is a medieval castle in Götzis with several structures still standing. A five-story residential tower with its entrance raised on the northeast side remains visible, while the western part shows foundations and walls of a former palace complex.
Construction of the castle began under the Counts of Montfort between 1311 and 1319. The House of Habsburg took control in 1390, after which the structure experienced different periods of use and decline.
The name Neu-Montfort recalls the Montfort family who once ruled this region. Visitors today can still observe medieval craftsmanship in the remains, particularly in the decorated tiles that once adorned interior spaces.
The ruins are accessible year-round for exterior viewing without special permits. It is best to visit during daylight hours to clearly see the remaining structures and architectural details.
During the Appenzell Wars of 1405 to 1408, Appenzell forces occupied this fortress but left it standing rather than destroying it, which was uncommon in that conflict. This mercy allowed the structure to survive to the present day.
