Burg Werfenstein

Burg Werfenstein is a castle ruin perched on a rocky hilltop above the Danube near Sankt Nikola an der Donau. The site preserves the remains of stone walls and a tower that once formed a complete fortification.

The site was first documented in 1242 and served to control river traffic through chains and toll collection. It was abandoned in the late 15th century and fell into decline.

The ruins reflect the medieval defense strategy along the Danube, where such fortifications monitored river trade and movement. Visitors can sense the strategic value this location held for regional control.

The ruins are visible from the Danube cycling path, which has passed nearby since 2010 and provides good views of the site. The location is easily accessible from the path for photos and observation.

A doctor from Linz bought the ruins in 1963 and transformed them into a private home by blending modern structures with the medieval walls. This unusual restoration shows how historical sites can be adapted for new purposes.
