Burg Werfenstein, Medieval castle ruin in Sankt Nikola an der Donau, Austria
The stone fortification stands on a rocky outcrop above the Danube River, containing remnants of ancient walls and a tower structure.
First documented in 1242, the castle controlled river traffic through chains stretched across the Danube until its abandonment in the late 15th century.
The castle ruins represent the medieval defense system along the Danube, where fortifications regulated maritime trade and collected tolls.
Visitors can observe the exterior of the castle ruins from the Danube cycling path, which passes near the historical structure since 2010.
A doctor from Linz purchased and transformed the ruins into a private residence in 1963, integrating modern construction with medieval remains.
