Wildegg Castle, Medieval castle in Wienerwald, Austria.

Wildegg Castle is a medieval stone fortress in the Wienerwald region of Lower Austria, perched on a forested hillside above the village of Sittendorf. The compact layout features thick stone walls and small windows arranged around a central courtyard, all typical of a defensive stronghold.

The castle was built in the Middle Ages as a fortified noble residence and went through several changes over the following centuries while keeping its original form. It is now a protected monument, one of the surviving examples of medieval castle architecture in Lower Austria.

The castle is run by the Katholische Jungschar der Erzdiözese Wien and serves as a gathering place for children and young people from the region. Visitors who walk through the grounds can sense that this is an active community space rather than a frozen monument.

The castle is on Wildeggerstraße in Sittendorf and is easiest to reach by car, as the area is wooded and rural. The path up to the entrance follows unpaved ground, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before setting out.

Despite looking like a typical medieval ruin from the outside, the castle is a fully functioning building used year-round for organized programs. This means the old stone walls regularly echo with the voices of children rather than with guided tours.
