Burgruine Dornach, Medieval castle ruin in Lasberg, Austria
Burgruine Dornach is a castle ruin in Lasberg situated at about 530 meters elevation overlooking the rolling countryside of the Mühlviertel region. The structure includes preserved stone walls, a gate tower, and outer fortifications that still convey its former defensive purpose.
The ruin was first recorded in 1416, though it faced severe damage from Hussite raids in 1427. After this attack, ownership changed and the site gradually fell into disrepair.
The ruin carries the name Dornach from a nearby village and still shows traces of its importance as a defensive stronghold. The preserved walls and gate tower reveal the craft of medieval builders.
The site is reachable on foot and offers far-reaching views from its elevated position across the surrounding landscape. Visitors should bring suitable footwear as the paths to the ruins can be uneven.
From 1505 until 1821, local farmers were permitted to extract stones from the decaying structure to build their own buildings. This practice left visible marks on the ruin and shaped the regional construction methods for generations.
