Funkhaus Wien, Broadcasting headquarters in Wieden, Austria
Funkhaus Wien is a broadcasting facility on Argentinierstraße designed with irregularly shaped studio spaces and multi-story sections. The spatial arrangement and construction were specifically engineered to achieve superior sound quality throughout the building.
The building was constructed between 1935 and 1939 as an architectural innovation for radio broadcasting. After wartime damage in 1945, it was restored under Soviet supervision and subsequently resumed regular operations.
The building serves as a gathering place where the ORF Radio Symphony and various radio stations work and broadcast daily. People visit to attend concerts and experience how radio programming is created in real time.
Visitors can attend concerts, recordings, and public readings in the main theater while the RadioCafe provides refreshments near the entrance. It is advisable to check what events are happening before visiting and allow time to explore the spaces.
The building has no rectangular floor plans in its broadcast halls and sound studios, as the irregular shapes were engineered to optimize acoustics. This unusual design solution allowed early radio pioneers to transmit broadcasts in an entirely new way.
