Innerberger Stadel, Heritage building in Steyr, Austria
The Innerberger Stadel is a Renaissance building at Grünmarkt featuring elaborate sgraffito decorations and a double-headed eagle coat of arms on its facade. The structure spans multiple levels with ornate exterior walls and now functions as a museum.
The building was erected between 1612 and 1613, initially serving as a provision store. In 1628, the Innerberger trade guild acquired it to operate their iron commerce business.
The building houses the city museum and displays local craft traditions along with the famous Steyrer Krippe collection, carved figures made in this region for generations. The exhibits show how important these handmade skills have been to the city's identity.
The museum is open during midday and afternoon hours on several weekdays, though you should check specific hours as they vary seasonally. The rooms are accessed by stairs, so visitors need to be able to climb steps.
The building retains its original wooden beam ceilings and vaulted ground floor, while an iron water spout extends between its two distinctive roofs. This metal detail was a practical drainage feature and shows the builders' craftsmanship and attention to detail.
