Grosser Speikkogel, Mountain summit in Carinthia, Austria
Grosser Speikkogel is the highest peak of the Koralpe mountain range in the Lavanttal Alps, rising to 2,140 meters. The summit commands wide views over surrounding alpine terrain and the valleys of Carinthia.
The region served as a strategic post during Roman times to monitor trade routes. Military installations were later constructed and continue to be maintained in modern form.
The summit represents a key point in Austrian mountaineering tradition, connecting multiple hiking paths that extend through the surrounding alpine landscape.
A paved road climbs from Parkplatz Koralpe to the summit with gradients averaging around 20 percent over roughly four kilometers. The terrain is relatively accessible and dry, with the best visiting season spanning spring through autumn.
Two large radar domes at the peak are part of Austria's airspace monitoring system operated by military authorities. These installations are visible from a distance and distinctly shape the mountain's appearance.
