Universitätszentrum Althanstraße, University complex in Alsergrund district, Vienna, Austria
The Universitätszentrum Althanstraße is a building complex in the Alsergrund district constructed between 1978 and 1995, spanning above the Franz-Josef railway station. It contains lecture halls, classrooms, and work areas serving multiple academic fields.
The complex was designed and built in the late 1970s to meet growing student numbers at the University of Vienna. Until 2013 it also housed departments of the Vienna University of Economics before that institution moved to a new campus.
The center serves students from different fields as a place to learn and connect with one another. You see groups working together in study areas and using the shared spaces throughout the day.
The center connects easily to Vienna's public transportation through several metro stations, tram lines, and bus routes nearby. Walking to and through the area is straightforward, and it bustles with activity during the academic term.
The structure spans an active railway line beneath it, which presented unusual engineering challenges during design and construction. This solution allowed a large campus to fit on limited land without disrupting train service.
