Mariensäule

Mariensäule is a granite memorial column in Wernstein am Inn that rises approximately 17 meters and features a statue of the Virgin Mary surrounded by four decorative cherubs at its base. The monument stands below Wernstein Castle near the Inn River and defines the character of the town square.

Emperor Ferdinand III commissioned the column in 1645 as an expression of gratitude for Vienna's protection during the Thirty Years War against Swedish forces. The structure was created during a period when religious monuments were erected across Central Europe to commemorate victories and divine providence.

The column embodies Catholic traditions through its architectural elements and serves as a gathering place for religious celebrations throughout the year. Visitors notice how the monument reflects the spiritual identity of this small river community.

The monument is easily accessible from Wernstein's center and sits directly along the main pathways near the Inn. Visitors can view the memorial freely from multiple angles and photograph it well from the surrounding walkways, with nice views possible from different positions.

The column underwent comprehensive restoration in 1990 by Franz Gyolcs and Klaus Wedenig, who documented each step of the preservation process. This detailed documentation offers insight into the craftsmanship and materials used to maintain the monument.
