Sonnwendstein, Mountain summit in Schottwien, Austria.
Sonnwendstein is a mountain summit in Schottwien, Austria, rising to 1523 meters between the Rax massif and the Stuhleck. The slopes are made of limestone and dolomite, and several marked trails reach the top from different directions.
A chapel was built at the summit between 1935 and 1936, making it the first permanent structure on the Sonnwendstein. In 1957, a radio transmitter was added, giving the site a role in regional broadcasting.
The name Sonnwendstein comes from old summer solstice celebrations once held on this peak. A small chapel at the top still draws visitors who come for a quiet moment tied to that local tradition.
The summit can be reached from several starting points, including Feistritzsattel, Semmering, Payerbach, Schottwien, and Maria Schutz, with trails suited to different fitness levels. Visiting in the warmer months is advisable, as paths are more accessible and safer.
On clear days, the top offers views toward the Vienna Basin and the Schneeberg and Rax peaks to the north. The panorama opens in almost every direction, which is uncommon for a summit at this elevation in the region.
