Justizanstalt Stein

Justizanstalt Stein is the second largest prison in Austria, occupying a former monastery compound in central Europe. The facility blends historic structures with modern security systems to house approximately 350 inmates.

The site began in 1850 when a Redemptorist monastery was converted into a penal institution. The original design accommodated 800 prisoners, but was later scaled down to its present capacity.

The chapel within the prison complex still serves as a place of worship for inmates today. Visitors can observe how this sacred space remains integrated into daily life behind the walls.

The prison is located on Steiner Landstraße in Krems and holds male inmates serving extended sentences. The facility operates additional branches in nearby areas, which may be relevant when planning a visit.

The prison operates satellite branches at multiple locations in the region, significantly expanding its total holding capacity. This decentralized structure is uncommon for a facility of this size.
