The K.k. Franz-Joseph-Militärakademie is a former military barracks in the Landstrasse district consisting of two buildings at Boerhaavegasse 13 and 15 connected by an iron bridge. Today, building 13 houses outpatient clinics of Rudolfstiftung Hospital, while building 15 operates as a federal boarding school.
The academy was built between 1895 and 1898 according to plans by architect Franz von Krauß for the Imperial-Royal Landwehr forces. It was part of a system of officer training institutions that the Austro-Hungarian Empire developed for its military structure.
The chapel on the first floor of building 13 features frescoes and an altar displaying a 19th-century Madonna and Child painting that visitors can still view today. This space reflects how military life once incorporated religious practice into daily routines.
The two buildings are located side by side in a quiet part of Landstrasse and are easy to identify by the distinctive iron bridge connecting them. Since the premises are now occupied by a hospital clinic and boarding school, public access to the interior is limited.
This was the only such institution in the Austro-Hungarian Empire specifically built to train officers for the territorial army rather than the regular military forces. The substantial iron bridge linking the buildings was a notable engineering feature that symbolized the connection between military function and modern construction techniques.
