Jakominiplatz, Central transportation square in Graz, Austria
Jakominiplatz is a central transportation hub in Graz where all tram lines and ten bus routes converge. The square connects major streets including Herrengasse, Joanneumring, and Radetzkystraße, serving as a key junction for movement throughout the city.
The square developed around 1790 from a former military defensive area and was named after postmaster Kaspar Andreas Ritter von Jacomini-Holzapfel-Waasen. This transformation from military to civilian use shaped the growth of Graz's city center.
Market stalls in the northern section display local products, while restaurants and shops surrounding the square create an active commercial hub. Visitors can observe daily city life and interact with residents going about their business.
The square is easy to reach on foot and features clear signage directing visitors to main transport stops at street level. It helps to be aware of busy periods and note the well-marked stops throughout the area.
Since 2005, Austrian police video surveillance systems monitor this heavily traveled area, providing security oversight of the transport junction. This infrastructure reflects modern safety measures integrated into the square's daily operations.
