Lermooser Tunnel, Road tunnel in Tyrol, Austria
The Lermooser Tunnel is a road tunnel stretching 3168 meters through the eastern slope of Grubigstein mountain. It connects the northern entrance near Lermoos to the southern entrance near Biberwier, allowing traffic to bypass these small villages.
The tunnel was initiated by engineering firm Lässer-Feizlmayr in 1981 and officially opened on July 6, 1984. The project arose from the need to keep through-traffic away from narrow mountain villages.
The tunnel construction reflects the regional commitment to preserving the character of small Alpine villages by redirecting traffic flow away from town centers.
The tunnel operates daily for thousands of vehicles connecting the German A7 motorway to the Austrian A12. Full lighting throughout the passage ensures safe travel at any time of day.
A second tunnel tube will begin construction in 2026 while the existing tube undergoes renovation planned for completion by 2030. This expansion will significantly increase traffic capacity through the mountain.
