Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze, Mountain summit in Ehrwald, Austria
Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze is a 2,417 meter (7,930 feet) peak in the Mieminger range in Tyrol with a distinctive pyramid shape. The ascent involves multiple secured sections that demand technical climbing skills and proper equipment.
Hermann von Barth made the first recorded ascent on July 27, 1873, establishing a major milestone in Alpine climbing. Since then the mountain has become a well-known climbing destination in the Ehrwald region.
Locals call this peak the Matterhorn of Ehrwald for its distinctive shape and commanding presence in the landscape. The name 'Sonnenspitze' refers to how sunlight hits the summit in the early morning and late afternoon, creating a striking visual effect.
Start early in the day to take advantage of better light and more stable weather conditions. Technical climbing experience with rope and harness is necessary, so only attempt the ascent with proper training and ideally with a mountain guide.
The two main climbing routes differ significantly in technical difficulty, offering options for climbers of varying skill levels. The southern approach presents greater challenges and a more intense climbing experience compared to the northern route.
