Windkraftanlage Lichtenegg, Wind turbine with observation deck in Lichtenegg, Austria

Windkraftanlage Lichtenegg is a large wind turbine in the small town of Lichtenegg with a public observation deck accessed by climbing the tower. The white structure stands prominently in the landscape and offers expansive views of rolling hills, fields, and forests from its upper platform.

The Enercon E-66 turbine was erected in 2003 on the Pesendorfer Höhe at 800 m above sea level. It is operated by BWE - Bucklige Welt Energie GmbH, which feeds the electricity into the EVN grid. In 2010, EVN, BWE, ÖGUT and the municipality of Lichtenegg opened a renewable-energy experience park nearby with ten small wind turbines, a photovoltaic system and a battery storage.

The turbine's name comes from the ridge Pesendorfer Höhe in the Bucklige Welt, and locals also call it Windkraftanlage Pesendorf. Since 2010 the operator BWE has run a renewable-energy park nearby with ten small wind turbines, a photovoltaic system and a storage unit, in cooperation with EVN, ÖGUT and the municipality of Lichtenegg.

The observation deck is open to visitors on certain days, so checking hours ahead of your visit is recommended. The site is well-maintained with clear paths and safety guidelines that make visiting both comfortable and accessible.

On 19 May 2019, ultrarunner Rainer Predl ran a full marathon inside the glazed observation cabin, covering 3,125 laps of 13.5 m for 42.19 km in 4:21:37 — the first such run in a wind turbine worldwide. The turbine's sway in the wind made it hard.
