Neues Rathaus

The Neues Rathaus is the city hall of Linz, located near the Danube River with multiple terraces and outdoor spaces. The building offers various rooms, including a large ceremonial hall and additional event spaces on the first floor.

Construction of the city hall began in 1980 after an architecture competition selected the design. The building marked Linz's growth as a modern administrative center alongside its historic old town.

The building houses the Gedenkraum Nikolaikapelle, which preserves memory of the former Nikolaikirche through exhibitions and objects from Alt-Urfahr. This room shows how the city has woven its own history into the modern structure.

The building is arranged in multiple levels that are accessible on foot across terraces. Visitors should allow plenty of time to explore the different outdoor areas and elevated spaces.

The building follows a design inspired by ancient Mesopotamian ziggurats, featuring stepped forms and accessible rooftop areas. This uncommon approach makes it stand out from typical city halls in unexpected ways.
