Pfarrkirche Zum Guten Hirten, Catholic church in Hietzing, Austria
Pfarrkirche Zum Guten Hirten is a modern concrete church building with an asymmetrical form, bearing a cement statue of Christ on its western side. A separate bell support structure with a cement figure marks the exterior appearance at the corner of Bossigasse and Schrutkagasse.
Construction began in 1963 after the Archdiocese of Vienna acquired the land in 1957, with the church consecrated in 1965. Its creation during the post-war period shaped the building's modern architectural style and construction methods.
The church takes its name from the Good Shepherd, a central Christian image that extends throughout its artistic decoration. Bronze figures inside, particularly the Stations of the Cross, display religious themes that visitors encounter while moving through the space.
Access is at the corner of Bossigasse and Schrutkagasse in the Hietzing district, where the modern concrete building is easy to spot from outside. The interior is open for visitors who wish to explore the artworks and spatial design.
The colored stained glass windows created by artist Isolde Maria Joham cast distinctive light patterns throughout the interior, shifting with the time of day. These blue, white, and red-white glass surfaces form a special artistic feature that often goes unnoticed by visitors on first impression.
