Steiner House

The Steiner House is a modernist villa in Hietzing, Vienna, featuring a distinctive arched tin roof that conceals additional floors above the neighborhood's height restrictions. The residence maintains its original structure under heritage protection, displaying clean lines and functional spaces characteristic of early modern residential design.

Adolf Loos designed and built this residence in 1910 for painter Lilly Steiner and her husband Hugo, creating an early example of modernist residential architecture. The house represents a turning point in how homes were designed and built during this transformative period.

The building demonstrates Loos's design philosophy through plain facades and thoughtfully organized interior spaces that reject unnecessary decoration. Visitors can still see these principles today in how each room is arranged for its specific purpose.

The building is protected as a historic monument and can only be viewed from the outside or through occasional guided tours offered by architectural organizations. The best view of the distinctive roof form can be appreciated from street level, particularly from the front elevation.
