Spitzkofel, Mountain peak in Leisach, Austria
Spitzkofel is a mountain peak in the Lienz Dolomites that rises 2,717 meters and features steep rock faces with exposed climbing sections. The route crosses through Hallebachtal valley and demands solid climbing skills for its technical passages.
The first documented ascent occurred in 1798, marking the start of mountaineering activities in this part of the Austrian Alps. Since then, the peak has become a destination for experienced alpine climbers.
Local mountaineering traditions center around the Kerschbaumer mountain hut, which provides shelter and meals while preserving Alpine customs for generations of climbers.
You will need complete via ferrata equipment and should begin at the Klammbrückl car park where marked trails start. Expect rough terrain and exposed sections that require careful footing throughout the climb.
From the summit you can see in all directions across both Austrian and Italian territory. Clear days reveal views of Großglockner and the peaks of the Carnic Alps along the border.
