Schiestlhaus, Mountain hut in Thörl, Austria
Schiestlhaus is a mountain hut in the Hochschwab massif in Styria, Austria, sitting at an elevation of 2,156 meters (7,073 ft). It has large panoramic windows, a dormitory, a dining room, and basic sanitary facilities for overnight guests.
The Austrian Alpine Club built the Schiestlhaus to support long-distance trekkers crossing the Hochschwab area. The building was later extensively renovated and became one of the most recognized overnight stops in Styrian alpine terrain.
The Schiestlhaus sits along one of Austria's busiest long-distance mountain routes and works as a natural gathering point for experienced hikers. Meals served here follow traditional Austrian alpine cooking, and the shared tables encourage conversation between people arriving from different trails.
The hut is only reachable on foot, so plan enough time for the ascent from the trailhead and check trail conditions before setting off. Sleeping spaces fill up quickly, so booking ahead is strongly recommended.
The Schiestlhaus was among the first alpine huts to be renovated following ecological principles, drawing electricity from renewable sources. It deliberately has no showers to keep water use as low as possible at that elevation.
