Arenberg Castle, Salzburg, Medieval castle in Altstadt, Salzburg, Austria.
Arenberg Castle is a historic urban residence on the right bank of the Salzach River in Salzburg's old town. Two three-story wings are joined by a central tower, and a modern conference center has been added to the complex.
The building was first recorded in the 14th century and grew gradually over the following centuries. Princess Sophie of Arenberg bought it in 1861 and had the central tower built to connect the two existing wings.
The name of the property comes from the Belgian noble Arenberg family, who reshaped it in the 19th century. Today it serves as the seat of a cultural foundation, giving the building a quiet working life rather than a purely ceremonial one.
The castle stands right on the Salzach riverbank in the old town and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Because the building works as an office and conference venue, visitor access may be limited to certain parts of the grounds.
When the castle park was laid out in 1792, workers found extensive Roman burial sites and objects beneath the ground. This shows that the site was already occupied in ancient times, long before the current building took shape.
