Schloss Dornach, Heritage castle in Saxen, Austria
Schloss Dornach sits on high ground near the Danube, merging an original manor house from 1455 with later baroque additions. The structure displays an octagonal tower and a terrace with Florentine-style loggias that span between projecting sections of the facade.
The original manor house was built in 1455 and transformed into a neo-baroque castle in the late 1800s by architect Cornelius Reischl. This renovation blended the medieval foundation with Renaissance details and contemporary design.
The name reflects a family with deep ties to the region, and today it functions as a private residence that tells the story of its many transformations. The layered architecture speaks to how different periods have left their mark on this place.
The site remains privately owned and can be viewed from the outside, best observed from pathways along the Danube riverbank. Visiting during daylight hours when the light is clear allows you to see the architecture and river views most clearly.
Swedish writer August Strindberg stayed here for several months in 1893 with his family, using the peaceful setting to write and paint. That period proved surprisingly productive for him despite personal tensions that arose.
