Greinburg

Greinburg is a stone castle perched on a granite hill overlooking the Danube River, featuring multiple ceremonial halls and an arcaded courtyard. The building spans several levels and displays architectural details that reflect its period of construction along with later enhancements.

Construction began in 1488 under the Prüschenk brothers with permission from Emperor Friedrich III., establishing this as Austria's oldest residential castle. The structure evolved through subsequent decades with multiple renovations to meet the changing needs of its inhabitants.

The castle houses the Upper Austrian Maritime Museum, displaying models and artifacts that document navigation history along the Danube. Visitors encounter objects and stories that reveal how the river shaped daily life and commerce for local communities across centuries.

The visit works best when approaching from the village below and allowing time for the stone steps and inclines. A flashlight helps when exploring the darker interior spaces, particularly in the upper rooms.

One interior room displays wall patterns made entirely from Danube River pebbles arranged into geometric forms. The effect is enhanced by natural light filtering through windows and casting shadows across the textured surface.
