Villa Grünau

Villa Grünau is a building on Friedrich-Schindler-Straße 1 in Kennelbach featuring wall paintings, a music hall, a large dome, and ornate lighting fixtures inside. The quality of these interior and exterior details shows the high standards applied during its original design and construction.

The house was built between 1887 and 1888 and served as the home of the industrial Schindler family at first. It became rental housing after 1950 and is now protected as a heritage monument.

The building reflects how successful industrial manufacturers in Vorarlberg expressed their wealth through architecture, with carefully designed spaces and costly ornamental details visible throughout. This style of building was a clear statement of economic power and social standing during that time.

The building is now divided into residential units and managed by the Kennelbach municipal authority as a protected monument since 1992. It is viewable from the outside, but visitors should be respectful as it remains a private residence.

Friedrich Wilhelm Schindler, the owner, developed several electrical innovations in the house including an electric stove and a central vacuum system, well before such technology became common. This made the villa an early testing ground for household technology around 1900.
